He was previously the mayor of Surakarta from 2005 to 2012 and the governor of Jakarta from 2012 to 2014.

Because of these challenges, in August 2019, President Joko Widodo announced that the capital of Indonesia would be moved from Jakarta to the planned city of Nusantara, in the province of East Kalimantan on the island of Borneo.
