A report on Amstel

Amsterdam was founded at the Amstel, that was dammed to control flooding; the city's name derives from the Amstel dam.

Holland was split up into five departments named "Texel", "Amstel", "Delf", "Schelde en Maas", and "Rijn".

The name Amstelveen comes from the Amstel, a local river (as does the name Amsterdam) and veen, meaning fen, peat, or moor.

Dam Square lies in the historical center of Amsterdam, approximately 750 m south of the main transportation hub, Centraal Station, at the original location of the dam in the river Amstel.
