The Damrak is an avenue and partially filled in canal at the centre of Amsterdam, running between Amsterdam Centraal in the north and Dam Square in the south.

- Damrak

It flows from the Aarkanaal and Drecht in Nieuwveen northwards, passing Uithoorn, Amstelveen, and Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, to the IJ in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam was founded at the Amstel, that was dammed to control flooding; the city's name derives from the Amstel dam.

The street was located on a rak (reach), a straight part of the Amstel river near a dam; hence the name.

- Damrak

The Amstel was formed around 1050 BC when a freshwater river cut into a tidal channel of the IJ which are now Damrak and Rokin.

Neolithic and Roman artefacts have been found in the prehistoric Amstel bedding under Amsterdam's Damrak and Rokin, such as shards of Bell Beaker culture pottery (2200-2000 BC) and a granite grinding stone (2700-2750 BC).

Dam Square or the Dam is a town square in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands.

Dam Square lies in the historical center of Amsterdam, approximately 750 m south of the main transportation hub, Centraal Station, at the original location of the dam in the river Amstel.

It links the streets Damrak and Rokin, which run along the original course of the Amstel River from Centraal Station to Muntplein (Mint Square) and the Munttoren (Mint Tower).
