It was the third area code created for use in the state in 1954, following the original 218 and 612.

Part of the southern portion of the original 612 territory, including Rochester and Mankato, was combined with the southwestern portion of 218 to form the new area code 507.

The southeastern portion, including the Twin Cities, was located in area code 612.

This resulted in three area codes, with 218 covering the northern band of the state, 612 covering the central band, and the new area code 507 forming a southern band.

It was created in 2000 along with area code 763 (northwest suburbs) when they were carved out of area code 612, which now only contains Minneapolis and a few inner-ring locales.

952 is bordered on the north and northeast by 763 and 612 respectively, on the east by area code 651, and by area code 507 to the south.
