When TVB first began broadcasting it was commonly known and promoted as "Wireless Television" (無綫電視) in Chinese to distinguish it from the then cable television broadcaster, Rediffusion Television (麗的呼聲), which later became ATV (亞洲電視).

In April 2016, RTHK took over the analogue channel frequencies of Asia Television (ATV) after the latter's free television licence expired.

These are also broadcast by Hong Kong's three commercial television channels, TVB, ViuTV and HKIBC, in addition to RTHK's own television network.

It began as a radio station in 1949 and became Asia Television on 24 September 1982.

When competitor TVB made its first free-to-air broadcast on 19 November 1967, RTV had 67,000 subscribers.
