A report on Manukau City, State Highway 1 (New Zealand) and Auckland

Manukau City was a territorial authority district in Auckland, New Zealand, that was governed by the Manukau City Council.

The area to the south of the isthmus contains the heart of Manukau, sprawled on either side of state highways 1 and 20, the latter of which approaches from the west after crossing Māngere Bridge.

At Orewa, the motorway becomes toll-free, crossing farmland to the North Shore of Auckland.

The motorway continues in a broadly southeast direction across the Auckland isthmus, then through Manukau and Papakura to the top of the Bombay Hills, just short of the Auckland/Waikato boundary.

They also allowed further massive expansion that resulted in the growth of suburban areas such as the North Shore (especially after the construction of the Auckland Harbour Bridge in the late 1950s), and Manukau City in the south.

The State Highway network connects the different parts of Auckland, with State Highway 1 being the major north–south thoroughfare through the city (including both the Northern and Southern Motorways) and the main connection to the adjoining regions of Northland and Waikato.
