The Big Number Change removed many, especially in Northern Ireland, and by July 2005 there were only 329 ranges in 42 codes.

PhONEday

Phone Day
In 1995, PhONEday partially addressed this by altering all geographic area codes to begin 01, freeing up hundreds of codes beginning 02 to 09 for other uses.
The PhONEday changes also released space for new geographic area codes beginning 02, which would come into use as part of the Big Number Change in 2000.

There is a widespread but erroneous assumption that London has three area codes 0203, 0207 and 0208, whereas in fact it has just one: 020.
After a sequence of changes in the 1990s, culminating with the Big Number Change, the current 020 code became active on 1 June 1999.
