A report on Malaria, Quinine and Blackwater fever
Quinine is a medication used to treat malaria and babesiosis.
- QuinineBlackwater fever is a complication of malaria infection in which red blood cells burst in the bloodstream (hemolysis), releasing hemoglobin directly into the blood vessels and into the urine, frequently leading to kidney failure.
- Blackwater feverIt may be that quinine plays a role in triggering the condition, and this drug is no longer commonly used for malaria prophylaxis.
- Blackwater feverQuinine, along with doxycycline, may be used if artemisinin is not available.
- MalariaQuinine can cause unpredictable serious and life-threatening blood and cardiovascular reactions including low platelet count and hemolytic-uremic syndrome/thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (HUS/TTP), long QT syndrome and other serious cardiac arrhythmias including torsades de pointes, blackwater fever, disseminated intravascular coagulation, leukopenia, and neutropenia.
- QuinineKidney failure is a feature of blackwater fever, where haemoglobin from lysed red blood cells leaks into the urine.
