Choice 96.9 began as an independent company in March 1990, broadcasting from studios in Trinity Gardens, Brixton.
Choice Digital was the digital variant of London radio station Choice FM, which could previously be heard via DAB Digital Radio in many locations around the UK and on Sky Digital channel 0114 and online at its website.

The Birmingham licence was sold to Chrysalis Radio in 1999 and became Galaxy Birmingham, but Choice expanded within the capital in May 2000 when a largely independent North London licence was awarded for Choice 107.1, with the intention of reaching a larger Afro-Caribbean audience outside the limited range of the coverage from Brixton. GCap were subsequently taken over by Global Radio, who already owned the Galaxy Network of dance/urban music stations.
The GCap purchase gave Global the network of FM stations which GCap had operated as The One Network (many of which are now part of the Heart or Capital networks), plus Classic FM, XFM, Choice FM, Gold and Chill.

Capital XTRA refreshed its weekend schedule at the start of 2017, hiring Afrobeats artist and DJ Afro B to host the Afrobeats show, DJ TiiNY, Stormzy's official DJ, for a new Friday night programme, and student radio winner Robert Bruce for a new UK-music led programme, 'Homegrown'.
British DJ's such as DJ Edu, with his show Destination Africa on BBC Radio 1Xtra, and DJ Abrantee, with his show on Choice FM, were early adopters of the sound and helped grant it a platform in the country.

Having previously been a minority shareholder, Capital Radio Group took full control of the station in February 2004 and moved the station's base from the target service area to the group's central studios in London's Leicester Square.
The building houses the radio stations Capital, Capital Xtra, Classic FM, Gold, Heart, LBC, Smooth Radio and Radio X.

A number of high-profile signings were made, at launch including former BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra DJ Tim Westwood, and subsequently Kiss FM DJ Jez Welham for the station's flagship show, Capital XTRA In The Morning.
As a result, he rejoined Capital FM on their sister station, Capital Xtra, initially occupying the 21:00-23:00 slot on Saturday nights.
