A crown prince is the male heir apparent to the throne in a royal or imperial monarchy.
Most monarchies refer to the heir apparent of their thrones with the descriptive term of crown prince but these heirs may also be accorded with a more specific substantive title, such as Prince of Orange in the Netherlands, Duke of Brabant in Belgium, Prince of Asturias in Spain (also granted to heir presumptives), or Prince of Wales in the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms.
The term crown prince is not used in monarchies wherein the hereditary sovereign holds a title below that of king/queen or emperor/empress (such as grand duke or prince), although it is sometimes used as a synonym for heir apparent.
For the often specific terminology concerning an heir apparent, see Crown prince.
