HDV

In 2003, DV was joined by a successor format HDV, which used the same tape format with a different video codec.
HDV is a format for recording of high-definition video on DV cassette tape.

Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire

Ancient Rome–The Rise And Fall of an Empire: CaesarThe Battle for Rome
For example, BBC used DVCPRO50 to record high-budget TV series, such as Space Race (2005) and Ancient Rome: The Rise and Fall of an Empire (2006).
The series was filmed with the Panasonic SDX 900 DVCPRO50 professional camcorder in widescreen progressive scan mode at 25 frames/s.

Codec

codecsdecoderdecoders
In 2003, DV was joined by a successor format HDV, which used the same tape format with a different video codec.
For example, a digital video (using a DV codec) of a sports event needs to encode motion well but not necessarily exact colors, while a video of an art exhibit needs to encode color and surface texture well.

Chroma subsampling

4:2:24:2:04:4:4
Prior to the DCT compression stage, chroma subsampling is applied to the source video in order to reduce the amount of data to be compressed.

Discrete cosine transform

DCTiDCTinverse discrete cosine transform
An intraframe video compression scheme is used to compress video on a frame-by-frame basis with the discrete cosine transform (DCT).
The DCT is used in JPEG image compression, MJPEG, MPEG, DV, Daala, and Theora video compression.

Sampling (signal processing)

sampling ratesamplingsample rate
Audio can be stored in either of two forms: 16-bit Linear PCM stereo at 48 kHz sampling rate (768 kbit/s per channel, 1.5 Mbit/s stereo), or four nonlinear 12-bit PCM channels at 32 kHz sampling rate (384 kbit/s per channel, 1.5 MBit/s for four channels).

Digital-S

D-9D9D9 (Digital-S)
A similar format, D-9, offered by JVC, uses videocassettes with the same form-factor as VHS.
The recording system is digital and for video uses DV compression at a 50 Mbit/s bitrate.

Pulse-code modulation

PCMlinear PCMLPCM
Audio can be stored in either of two forms: 16-bit Linear PCM stereo at 48 kHz sampling rate (768 kbit/s per channel, 1.5 Mbit/s stereo), or four nonlinear 12-bit PCM channels at 32 kHz sampling rate (384 kbit/s per channel, 1.5 MBit/s for four channels).
LPCM has been defined as a part of the DVD (since 1995) and Blu-ray (since 2006) standards. It is also defined as a part of various digital video and audio storage formats (e.g. DV since 1995, AVCHD since 2006 ).

Interlaced video

interlacedinterlaceinterlacing
Closely following ITU-R Rec. 601 standard, DV video employs interlaced scanning with the luminance sampling frequency of 13.5 MHz.
It is still included in digital video transmission formats such as DV, DVB, and ATSC.

Pixel aspect ratio

square pixelsquare pixelsaspect ratio
The same frame size is used for 4:3 and 16:9 frame aspect ratios, resulting in different pixel aspect ratios for fullscreen and widescreen video.
However, some formats (ex., HDV, DVCPRO HD) use non-square pixels internally for image storage, as a way to reduce the amount of data that must be processed, thus limiting the necessary transfer rates and maintaining compatibility with existing interfaces.

Camcorder

camcorderstapeless camcordervideo
It was launched in 1995 with joint efforts of leading producers of video camera recorders.
In 1995 Sony, JVC, Panasonic and other video-camera manufacturers launched DV, which became a de facto standard for home video production, independent filmmaking and citizen journalism.

HDCAM

HD Cam SRHDCAM SRhigh-definition video
The main competitor to DVCPRO HD was HDCAM, offered by Sony.
The main competitor to HDCAM is the DVCPRO HD format offered by Panasonic.

P2 (storage media)

P2P2 cardDVCPRO P2
Panasonic DVCPRO HD and AVC-Intra camcorders can record DV (as well as DVCPRO) onto P2 cards.
It features tapeless (non-linear) recording of DV, DVCPRO, DVCPRO25, DVCPRO50, DVCPRO-HD, or AVC-Intra streams on a solid-state flash memory.

Audio Video Interleave

AVI.aviDV-AVI
DIF blocks are the basic units of DV streams and can be stored as computer files in raw form or wrapped in such file formats as Audio Video Interleave (AVI), QuickTime (QT) and Material Exchange Format (MXF).
DV AVI is a type of AVI file where the video has been compressed to conform with DV standards.

AVCHD

AVCCAMAVCHD 2.0
Some Panasonic AVCHD camcorders (AG-HMC80, AG-AC130, AG-AC160) record DV video onto Secure Digital memory cards.
Just as editing DVCPRO HD and HDV video once demanded an expensive high-end computer, AVCHD editing software requires powerful machines.

QuickTime

MOV.movMOV (QuickTime)
QuickTime-DV is DV video wrapped into QuickTime container. This container is used primarily on Apple computers.
Other file formats that QuickTime supports natively (to varying degrees) include AIFF, WAV, DV-DIF, MP3, and MPEG program stream.

8 mm video format

8mmHi-8Hi8
Regular DV tape uses Metal Evaporate (ME) formulation, which was pioneered for use in Hi8 camcorders.
However, the format in which video is encoded and stored on the tape itself is the entirely digital DV format (and thus very different from the analog Video8 and Hi8).

XDCAM

XDCAM EXEX1MPEG HD422
Sony XDCAM family of cameras can record DV onto either Professional Disc or SxS memory cards.
Video is recorded with DV, MPEG-2 Part 2 or MPEG-4 compression schemes.

Video journalism

video journalistvideojournalistvideo
The high quality of DV images, especially when compared to Video8 and Hi8 which were vulnerable to an unacceptable amount of video dropouts and "hits", prompted the acceptance by mainstream broadcasters of material shot on DV. The low costs of DV equipment and their ease of use put such cameras in the hands of a new breed of videojournalists.
Michael Rosenblum compared the introduction of video cameras to the invention of the portable camera in the 1930s: film spools of plastic made photography independent from heavy plates and tripods, and digital video technology liberates TV from heavy electronic news gathering (ENG) equipment, artificial light and television studios in much the same manner.

Final Cut Pro

Final CutApple Final Cut ProFinal Cut Pro 2.0
Apple Inc.'s Final Cut Pro: Final Cut Pro allows importing from all DV, HDV, and AVCHD (using the Apple Intermediate Codec or ProRes) cameras. It supports rewinding, fast-forwarding, pausing, stopping and playing from the computer.
Final Cut Pro provides non-linear, non-destructive editing of any QuickTime-compatible video format including DV, HDV, P2 MXF (DVCProHD), XDCAM (via plug-in), 2K, 4K and 5K film formats and can import projects directly from iMovie for iOS.

Serial Data Transport Interface

SDTI
High end cameras and VTRs may have additional professional outputs such as SDI, SDTI or analog component video.
Developed to address the needs of the growing number of compressed video standards (DV, DVCPRO, BetaSX, MPEG2) it allows lossless transfer of data to other devices which have the same codec, for example DV to DV or SX to SX.

Betacam

Digital BetacamDigiBetaMPEG IMX
Comparable high quality standard definition digital tape formats include Sony's Digital Betacam, launched in 1993, and MPEG IMX, launched in 2001.
