The Indore District has an area of 3,898 km² and borders the districts of Ujjain to the north, Dewas to the east, Khargone (West Nimar) to the south, and Dhar to the west.

Mandla, Dhar, Dindori, Barwani, Jhabua and Alirajpur districts have more than 50% tribal population, with Jhabua and Alirajpur having nearly 90% tribal population.

The district is bounded by the districts of Shajapur on the northeast and east, Dewas to the southeast, Indore to the south, Dhar to the southwest, and Ratlam to the west and northwest.

It is bounded by Mandsaur District to the north, Jhalawar District of Rajasthan state to the northwest, Ujjain District to the east, Dhar District to the south, Jhabua District to the southwest, and Pratapgarh District of Rajasthan to the west.
