Die Gezeichneten (The Branded or The Stigmatized) is an opera in three acts by Franz Schreker with a German-language libretto by the composer.

Conductor Michael Gielen revived the opera at the Frankfurt Opera in 1979.
He directed the Frankfurt Opera from 1977 to 1987, later called the Gielen Era, winning stage directors such as Hans Neuenfels and Ruth Berghaus, and reviving operas such as Schreker's Die Gezeichneten which had premiered in Frankfurt in 1918.

The outbreak of World War I interrupted the composer's success but with the première of his opera Die Gezeichneten, in Frankfurt on 25 April 1918, Schreker moved to the front ranks of contemporary opera composers.

Anne Schwanewilms

It was staged, albeit heavily cut, at the Salzburg Festival in 2005, directed by Nikolaus Lehnhoff and conducted by Kent Nagano, with Robert Brubaker (Alviano) and Anne Schwanewilms (Carlotta) in the leading roles.
She sang the lead role of Carlotta in Franz Schreker's Die Gezeichneten at the Salzburg Festival in 2005, recorded and subsequently published on DVD by Opus Arte.

Ludwig Rottenberg

The complete opera was first performed on 25 April 1918 by the Frankfurt Opera, conducted by Ludwig Rottenberg.
Numerous contemporary operas were staged there during this period, among others the world premiere performances of Der ferne Klang (1912), Die Gezeichneten (1918) and Der Schatzgräber (1920) by Franz Schreker.

Schreker wrote the libretto in 1911 at the request of composer Alexander Zemlinsky based on the 1904 play Hidalla by German playwright Frank Wedekind.
Hidalla was used as a source for a libretto by Franz Schreker, intended to be set by Alexander von Zemlinsky, but later set by Schreker himself in 1915 as the opera Die Gezeichneten.

He created roles in several world premieres, including Wolf in Franz Schreker's Das Spielwerk und die Prinzessin (1913), Vitellozzo Tamare/Andrea in Schreker's Die Gezeichneten (1918), Baliv in Schreker's Der Schatzgräber (1920), and Rabbi Leone in Eugène d'Albert's Der Golem (1926).

Robert Brubaker (Alviano), Anja Kampe (Carlotta) and Martin Gantner (Tamare) sang the principal roles.
In 2009 she returned to Glyndebourne as Isolde in Tristan und Isolde, and in April 2010 she sang in the American premiere of Franz Schreker's Die Gezeichneten at Los Angeles Opera.

The American premiere was staged by Los Angeles Opera on 10 April 2010, followed by three more performances.
To date, the company has presented Alexander von Zemlinsky's Eine florentinische Tragödie (An Italian Tragedy) and Der Zwerg (The Dwarf), the U.S. premiere of Viktor Ullmann's Der zerbrochene Krug (The Broken Jug), Walter Braunfels' Die Vögel (The Birds) and the U.S. premiere of Franz Schreker's Die Gezeichneten (The Stigmatized) as part of this mission, as well as children's performances of Hans Krasa's Brundibar.

Bruno Walter brought Hugo Wolf's Der Corregidor to Munich Festival for him, at some expense, and Erb became completely, almost exclusively associated with it. The theatre valued his growing dramatic power and insight, and he relished such works as Franz Schreker's Der ferne Klang and (later) Die Gezeichneten.
