Pironi and Cooper's Ansett Team Elfin team mate John Bowe each drove an Elfin MR8 in the race, with Pironi finishing in third place, four laps down on the Williams FW07B Formula One car of World Champion Alan Jones.
After graduating from domestic Formula Ford racing Bowe moved into the Australian Drivers Championship in the late 1970s, racing Elfin Formula 5000s for the most prestigious team of the era, the factory Ansett Team Elfin run by Elfin Sports Cars founder and chief designer Garrie Cooper.

During the 1978 Australian Grand Prix at the fast Sandown Raceway in Melbourne, he suffered a broken leg in a high-speed crash while driving his own Elfin MR8 Formula 5000.
On lap 22 Garrie Cooper broke some ribs and badly broke his leg in a 250 km/h crash at Rothmans Rise on the back straight, completely destroying his self-designed Elfin MR8 in the process.

After failing to secure a permanent drive in Formula One he returned to Australia, winning the Rothmans International Series in 1979 in an Elfin MR8 for the Ansett Team Elfin factory team run by Elfin Sports Cars founder Garrie Cooper, and the 1979 Australian Rallycross Championship in a Volkswagen Beetle.

This car made its race début in Coopers hands at the 1980 Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne's Calder Park Raceway.
However, the Adelaide based Ansett Team Elfin ran behind schedule in building the new car and with the new MR9 untested prior to the race, team boss and Elfin designer Garrie Cooper decided he would race the car himself while Pironi would join regular team leader John Bowe in racing one of the team's older, more conventional Elfin MR8s.
