Gipsy Hill

Gipsy Hill is an area in south London within the London Borough of Lambeth.

In the northern part of the borough are the central London districts of the South Bank, Vauxhall and Lambeth; in the south are the suburbs of Gipsy Hill, Streatham, West Dulwich and West Norwood.

Gipsy Hill is the name of the main road that runs in a southerly direction from Gipsy Road, near its junction with South Croxted Road, up to Westow Hill in Upper Norwood.

It was also a haunt of Gypsies, with many local street names and pubs recording the link, notably Gipsy Hill.

Christ Church in Gipsy Hill is an Anglican Church in the London Borough of Lambeth.

It is contiguous with Anerley, Dulwich Wood, Gipsy Hill, Penge, South Norwood, Sydenham and Upper Norwood.

It borders the London Boroughs of Southwark and Croydon.

Gipsy Hill ward is represented by three elected members of Lambeth Borough Council and includes some areas that are often identified as parts of West Norwood and West Dulwich.

The 18-room bunker was constructed between 1963 and 1966 as part of a block of flats on the Central Hill Estate called Pear Tree House.

A large area of Gipsy Hill in Lambeth was designated for a new housing estate and, as it was in the extreme south of the borough and well protected by the local hills, a site at the junction of Lunham Road and Hawke Road in SE19 was chosen.

It takes its name from the presence of Gipsies in what was a relatively remote rural area until Gipsy Hill railway station was opened in 1856.

Krept and Konan are a British hip hop duo from London, consisting of Casyo "Krept" Johnson, born February 4, 1990 from Gipsy Hill and Karl "Konan" Wilson, born September 3, 1989 from Thornton Heath, the son of Delroy Wilson otherwise known as 'Jamaica's first child star'.

The hill was once covered by the Great North Wood which covered all of Sydenham, Norwood, Woodside, Gipsy Hill etc. In the 19th Century it was home to the spa and health resort of Sydenham Wells.

Born in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Chalobah moved to England at the age of seven and grew up in Gipsy Hill in the London Borough of Lambeth.
