A report on Green Mountain Peace and Justice Party, Mary Alice Herbert and Socialist Party USA

Mary Alice "Mal" Herbert (February 28, 1935 - May 13, 2021) was an American schoolteacher and politician from Vermont who ran for vice president as the candidate for the Socialist Party USA in 2004; and ran for many offices in her home state.

Herbert was a frequent candidate for state office in the 1980s and 1990s under the banner of the Liberty Union Party, a nonviolent socialist party active only in the state of Vermont.

Hawkins also received the Green Party 2020 presidential nomination, and ran for that of various state-level parties, such as the Liberty Union Party in Vermont, in a bid to unite the "non-sectarian independent Left" behind a single campaign.

In 2012, the party once again re-qualified for major party status as a result of a 13.1% showing for Liberty Union candidate Mary Alice Herbert in the election for Vermont Secretary of State against Democrat Jim Condos.

Also in 2012, candidate Mary Alice Herbert received 13.1% of the vote for Vermont Secretary of State while running with the dual nomination of both the Socialist and Vermont Liberty Union parties.

For the 1972 and 1976 elections, the LUP was a member of the national People's Party, thus the People's presidential candidates were the LUP's. In 1980, 1988, 1996, and 2000 it endorsed the Socialist Party USA's candidates.
