However, as a consequence, the football team missed their chance on qualifing on the 2017 and 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup tournaments as well as the qualifying rounds for the 2019–20 CONCACAF Nations League and the 2017 Copa Centroamericana, as they missed deadlines to have their suspension lifted.
The tournament was played in round-robin format as a result of Guatemala not being able to participate due to FIFA's suspension of the National Football Federation of Guatemala.
