In the mid-to-late 20th century, the city's economic fortunes fluctuated with its major industries consisting of government, heavy manufacturing, agriculture, and food services (nearby Hershey is home of the chocolate maker, located just 10 mi east).

It was planned to link downtown Harrisburg with its eastern suburbs in Dauphin and Lebanon counties, including the areas of Hummelstown, Hershey and Lebanon, and the city of York in York County.

The eastern segment, located entirely within Pennsylvania, runs from Hershey east to King of Prussia, near Philadelphia.

The eastern section of US 422 begins at a partial cloverleaf interchange with US 322 and the eastern terminus of PA 39 east of the borough of Hummelstown in Derry Township, Dauphin County, heading northeast as a four-lane freeway that soon ends and becomes an at-grade divided highway called West Chocolate Avenue.

The building features brownstone quarried out of the neighboring town of Hummelstown.

He and his family established Country Meadows and Providence Place Retirement Communities in the 1980s and 90s, and resided in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania.

Leader died on May 9, 2013, in Hershey, Pennsylvania at the age of 95 at Country Meadows Retirement Community, which he founded.
