Thom Cox (born Thomas J. Cox) has been with Lookingglass Theatre Company for more than thirty years, and, along with David Schwimmer and six other artists, co-founded the theatre company in 1988 while still a student at Northwestern University.

She is an ensemble member of the Lookingglass Theatre Company, the Manilow Resident Director at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, Illinois, and also serves as the Jaharis Family Foundation Professor of Performance Studies at Northwestern University.

The success of these three theaters inspired the creation of other small troupes that grew, notably the Steppenwolf Theatre and the Victory Gardens Theater, both of which, along with the Goodman Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre and Lookingglass Theatre Company, were honored with regional theater Tony Awards, the only city in the country to have five theaters so honored.

An itinerant theater company for years, Lookingglass moved into a permanent home on June 14, 2003, with a new theater in the renovated Water Tower Water Works on Chicago's Magnificent Mile.
In 2003 and 2004 the building was awarded several honors for adaptive reuse based on renovations which accommodated the Lookingglass Theatre Company.
