May Company Building (Wilshire, Los Angeles)

Completed in 1939, the May Company Building on the Miracle Mile in the Wilshire district, Los Angeles, is a celebrated example of Streamline Moderne architecture.

The Miracle Mile development was initially anchored by the May Company Department Store with its landmark 1939 Streamline Moderne building on the west and the E. Clem Wilson Building on the east, then Los Angeles's tallest commercial building.

The building was operated as a May Company department store from 1939 until 1992, when May merged with J. W. Robinson's to form Robinsons-May.

Two well-known stores were the flagship Downtown store on 8th Street between Broadway and Hill streets, and the May Company Wilshire at Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue.

The building's architect Albert C. Martin, Sr., also designed the Million Dollar Theater and Los Angeles City Hall.

In 1994 the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) acquired the building and, as "LACMA West", used it as exhibition space for the museum.

Also in 1994, LACMA purchased the adjacent former May Company department store building, an impressive example of streamline moderne architecture designed by Albert C. Martin Sr. LACMA West increased the museum's size by 30 percent when the building opened in 1998.

The building will be repurposed and the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is set to open in the building in 2020.

The Museum will be established in the historic May Company Building—renamed the Saban Building following a $50 million gift from Cheryl and Haim Saban—on the corner of Wilshire and Fairfax on Los Angeles's Museum Mile.
