Ocean Waves, also known as I Can Hear the Sea, is a 1993 Japanese anime television film directed by Tomomi Mochizuki and written by Kaori Nakamura based on the 1990 novel of the same name by Saeko Himuro.
Mochizuki became known from the early 1990s as director of Ranma ½, Kimagure Orange Road and the Studio Ghibli TV movie Ocean Waves, he is also known for having directed Twin Spica, Zettai Shounen, the acclaimed World Masterpiece Theater series Porphy no Nagai Tabi.

GKIDS

In December 2016, GKIDS announced that the film would be remastered for a limited theatrical release, beginning on December 28, 2016, with a home video release in Spring 2017.
GKIDS has since also managed the North American distribution of three new Studio Ghibli films, From Up on Poppy Hill in 2013, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya in 2014, and When Marnie Was There in 2015 as well as the first-time North American releases of Only Yesterday and Ocean Waves in 2016.

The film is based on Himuro's novel which was first serialized, with illustrations by Katsuya Kondō, starting from the February 1990 issue of Animage magazine.
Other titles serialized in Animage include Ocean Waves (1990–1995), a novel by Saeko Himuro, which was later made into a television movie by the same title.
