The circuit reopened in October 1967 and hosted the Phillip Island 500K endurance race, a round of the Australian Manufacturers' Championship, from 1971 to 1977.

The 500K was a round of the Australian Manufacturers' Championship from 1971 to 1975 and counted towards both the Australian Championship of Makes and the Australian Touring Car Championship in 197s6 and 1977.
These races included Sandown’s Hang Ten 400 and the Phillip Island 500K, although notably not the Bathurst 1000.

The 500K was a round of the Australian Manufacturers' Championship from 1971 to 1975 and counted towards both the Australian Championship of Makes and the Australian Touring Car Championship in 197s6 and 1977.

The Triple Eight entry of Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup also led the other two events late in the race, before being overtaken by the Holden Racing Team's Garth Tander.
Among all his other achievements, Lowndes has claimed eight 500 kilometre V8 Supercar/ATCC endurance titles (five Sandown 500 victories, two L&H 500 crowns and one Queensland 500 win).

In 2017, the Phillip Island SuperSprint format was dropped in favour of two 250 km races, which led to the revival of the Phillip Island 500 name.
The circuit has also previously hosted championship rounds as the Phillip Island 500, in 1976 and 1977, from 2008 to 2011 and from 2017 to 2018.

Sandown 500

The race was revived in 2008 as two-driver endurance event for V8 Supercars, replacing the Sandown 500 as the lead-in event to the annual Bathurst 1000 race.
After a change of promoter of Sandown Raceway's motorsport activities, a changed V8 Supercars calendar resulted in the 500 kilometre event moving to the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit for the 2008 season, while Sandown reverted to hosting a sprint round, an event which became known as the Sandown Challenge.
