Missouri Valley Conference

It is headquartered in St. Louis, in the same complex that also contains the offices of the Missouri Valley Conference and Missouri Valley Football Conference.
However, five members have football programs in the Missouri Valley Football Conference (known as the Gateway from 1985 to 2008) of Division I FCS, and a sixth and a seventh compete in another FCS conference, the Pioneer Football League.

Morehead State University

Morehead State University is currently the only public school in the conference. Following an NCAA rule change passed in January 1991, which required Division I schools to conduct all sports at the Division I level by 1993, the conference was formed by charter members Butler University, the University of Dayton, Drake University, the University of Evansville, and Valparaiso University.
Since the A-10 does not sponsor football, the Butler football team plays in the FCS's Pioneer League.

Big South Conference

Although Campbell moved in 2011 from the Atlantic Sun Conference to the Big South Conference, which sponsors football, it did not join the Big South in football and remained in the PFL through the 2017 season.
In November 2016, Campbell announced that it would begin offering scholarships and move its football program from the Pioneer Football League to the Big South in 2018.
