ROH Survival of the Fittest

He was the first winner of ROH's annual Survival of the Fittest tournament in 2004.

He won ROH's Survival of the Fittest tournament in November 2010 which propelled him to win the World Championship.

Prior to signing with WWE, Lopez wrestled under the ring name Tyler Black for Ring of Honor (ROH), where he held the ROH World Championship once and the ROH World Tag Team Championship twice (with Jimmy Jacobs), as well as the winner of the 2009 Survival of the Fittest tournament.

On September 24 at 2005 Survival of the Fittest, Strong defeated Samoa Joe, Jay Lethal, Generation Next teammate Austin Aries, and Colt Cabana to win the titular event, thus earning himself another shot at the ROH World Championship in the future.

On October 6, Delirious defeated Jimmy Rave, qualifying for the 2006 Survival of the Fittest final later on in the evening.

He defeated Sal Rinauro to advance to the finals of the 2005 Survival of the Fittest tournament on September 24, but was eliminated by Roderick Strong.

At Survival of the Fittest 2007, Hero single-handedly eliminated Austin Aries, Roderick Strong, Claudio Castagnoli, Rocky Romero and Human Tornado to win the 2007 Survival of the Fittest tournament.

On November 12, Cole participated in the 2010 edition of the Survival of the Fittest tournament.

The tournament setup is based on Maryland Championship Wrestling's Shane Shamrock Memorial Cup, as ROH was to continue the Shane Shamrock Memorial Cup following the shutdown of MCW in 2003.

ROH was forced to move the show to Philadelphia and renamed the show Survival of the Fittest.

Human Tornado made his Ring of Honor debut on October 19, 2007 in Las Vegas, Nevada defeating Shane Hagadorn and Tony Kozina to make it to the 2007 Survival of the Fittest elimination match, where he was the first participant eliminated by the eventual winner, Chris Hero.

In November, the duo lost to the Briscoe Brothers in a qualifying match for the Survival of the Fittest tournament.
