During the Selangor Civil War of the 1860s and 1870s, Yap Ah Loy's gangs who were aligned with Tengku Kudin repelled Syed Mashor's troops away from Kuala Lumpur and pushed them further north.
The two largest Chinese gangs, the Hai San (based in Kuala Lumpur) and the Ghee Hin (based in the Kanching (present day Templer Park) and Rawang area), had engaged in fighting to gain control of tin production in the town.

To sustain the growth in size and population, the PLUS North South highway has now been complemented by the Guthrie Corridor Expressway (linking Rawang to Shah Alam), the LATAR highway (linking Rawang to Kuala Selangor) and Rawang–Serendah bypass that replaces an earlier Outer Ring Road proposal. One can choose to take the Rawang Interchange from the North–South Expressway, the Guthrie Corridor Expressway from Rawang South Interchange, the Kuala Lumpur–Kuala Selangor Expressway from Rawang South Interchange, the road from Batang Berjuntai, or the trunk road to Rawang.
It connects Shah Alam to Rawang.

Kundang

Until the mid-2000s, the borders of Rawang has greatly expanded to encompass the rubber estates outside Serendah to the north (now the townships of Bukit Beruntung and Bukit Sentosa); and Sungai Bakau and parts of Kundang to the west (now the townships of Bandar Tasik Puteri, Bandar Country Homes, Emerald West and Anggun Rawang).
It is located approximately 17 km from Rawang, Selangor and 33 km north-west of Kuala Lumpur.

The 32 km expressway connects Ijok near Kuala Selangor to Templer's Park near Rawang and not Kuala Lumpur as its name suggests – consequently, motorists will need to travel another 20 km to Kuala Lumpur via Kuala Lumpur–Rawang Highway.

Port Klang Line

It is also served by the Tanjung Malim-Port Klang Route, commonly known as the Port Klang Line on the KTM Komuter; before July 2016 passengers were required to alight at this station and change trains to continue their journey to Tanjung Malim.

The expressway runs in a north–south direction close to the northwestern coast of the peninsula, connecting several major towns including Alor Setar, Butterworth, Taiping, Ipoh and Rawang while also providing access to several rural villages on its path.
