In 1979, Kingen sold Michael and Steve Snyder the rights to open a Red Robin in Yakima, Washington and The Snyder Group Company became Red Robin's first franchisee.

Michael James Snyder (February 24, 1950 – December 2, 2018) was an American business executive, who is best known for having been the first franchisee of the Red Robin restaurant chain.

The owner, Sam, sang in a barbershop quartet and could frequently be heard singing the song "When the Red, Red Robin (Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along)".

The song helped inspire the name of the American casual dining restaurant chain Red Robin: the owner of the original restaurant, in the University District of Seattle, sang in a barbershop quartet which frequently sang the song, and in the 1940s he renamed his restaurant "Sam's Red Robin".

The original Red Robin stood at the corner of Furhman and Eastlake Avenues E. in Seattle, at the southern end of the University Bridge.

It was a favored hangout for University of Washington students.

In 1985, Red Robin boasted 175 restaurants when the corporate headquarters was moved from downtown Seattle to Irvine, California after CEO Kingen sold a controlling interest in Red Robin Corp. to Skylark Corporation of Japan and where Michael Snyder had Red Robin offices.

Stephen Carley joined Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, Inc. as Chief Executive Officer and as a director in September 2010.

It is speculated that in the same way that Dick and Jason became super heroes with their own heroic careers, Tim Drake started his career as the super hero Red Robin (which was not portrayed in the TV show and The All-New Batman: The Brave and The Bold comics)
