It is the very first goregrind album, a musical genre with lyrical focus on grotesque medical and pathological images as opposed to the political themes found in anarcho/crust punk bands.

In their Reek of Putrefaction era, Carcass used pitch shifters, medical imagery and several visceral associations when it originally conceived the band, a deviation from the frequently political or left-wing lyrics commonly used in the hardcore punk and grindcore scenes.

Reek of Putrefaction was recorded in four days at Ritch Bitch Studios in Birmingham.

According to guitarist Bill Steer, the studio's engineer "ruined" the record, especially its drum tracks.

When the master recording was first sent to the pressing plant, the original vinyl LP had to be pressed at lower volumes, because the bass frequencies were so low (sometimes reaching 25 Hz) that they were in danger of rendering higher frequencies inaudible.
