Avatele has also produced its fair share of prominent Niueans past and present, including Niue's late inaugural Premier Sir Robert Rex, his late brother and long-serving Senior Advisor to Government Leslie Rex OBE, the late Rev. Ikiua Lupo first President of the Ekalesia Kerisiano Niue, the late Takelesi Lagaluga first Niuean Head of a Government Department & his son Hon.

He was elected into office in the General Elections of early 1993, taking over from the interim premiership of Young Vivian, which was put in place following the passing of long-serving Premier Sir Robert Rex in December 1992.

He was a leading architect, with Robert Rex and Young Vivian, of the modern Niue and in the formulation of the its Constitution, creating a pathway for the island to become self-governing on 19 October 1974, which followed a visit from the United Nations Decolonisation Committee to Niue.
