The stable became inactive following WrestleMania 32, when Triple H was dethroned as WWE World Heavyweight Champion by Roman Reigns and Shane McMahon received authority to run Raw.
Reigns had earlier refused offers by Triple H to join The Authority, which would have automatically placed him in the tournament finals, but Reigns fought in the whole tournament and after his victory, he speared Triple H, who tried to congratulate him.

On the October 14 episode of Raw, The Rhodes Brothers defeated Rollins and Reigns again in a no disqualification match for the WWE Tag Team Championship after an attack by Big Show.

From June 2013, members of the McMahon family began to dispute various elements of the control of WWE, such as the fates of Daniel Bryan, as well as Raw and SmackDown General Managers Brad Maddox and Vickie Guerrero, respectively.
The next night on Raw, Triple H and the McMahons endorsed Orton as "the face of the WWE" while labeling Bryan a "B+ player" and forming The Authority faction, claiming that the company was looking for Orton as champion instead of Bryan, who also assumed the top babyface role (heroic character) in WWE with Cena being out injured.

Triple H and Stephanie reunited against Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 33, where Rollins defeated Triple H, but the two were not referred to as The Authority again until 2018, where Triple H and Stephanie McMahon were defeated by Kurt Angle and Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania 34 in a mixed tag team match.
After multiple losses to The Shield and Batista quitting WWE, Triple H revealed a Plan B: Rollins attacked his Shield teammates and joined Triple H's Authority, thus turning heel.

Next, Cena challenged then WWE Champion Randy Orton to unify their respective championships, with The Authority agreeing and arranging for a Tables, Ladders and Chairs title unification match at the TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs pay-per-view, which Cena lost.

The Authority shares similarities with The Corporation and The McMahon-Helmsley Faction, and has also had ties to Triple H's previous stables D-Generation X and Evolution, the latter of which existed alongside The Authority for a brief period in 2014.
During Triple H's heel Authority storyline which began later in the year, both Shawn Michaels (in a non-wrestling capacity) and the New Age Outlaws returned as babyfaces only to eventually turn heel against anti-authority faces on Hunter's behalf, becoming occasional allies of the Authority in the process.

Orton defeated Cena again in a rematch at Royal Rumble after interference by The Wyatt Family.
After Orton's victory at Survivor Series, Cena came down to the ring with his title, and celebrated with the crowd as The Authority (Triple H, Stephanie McMahon and Kane) looked on, much to Orton's chagrin.

In September, Joey Mercury and Jamie Noble were seen taking orders from Triple H and used in segments throughout the show.

From June 2013, members of the McMahon family began to dispute various elements of the control of WWE, such as the fates of Daniel Bryan, as well as Raw and SmackDown General Managers Brad Maddox and Vickie Guerrero, respectively.
Following this, Maddox began to compete with Kane to gain favor of The Authority over who ran Raw better before forming an alliance with Kane, aiding him in his feud with CM Punk.

During this time, The Authority were also feuding with Big Show, who as well as Bryan, was voicing his displeasure of Triple H's regime.
Following this, The Authority (Triple H and Stephanie McMahon) claimed Show was broke, and in order to save his job, forced him to knock out his friends including Daniel Bryan, Dusty Rhodes, and The Miz.

In the following weeks, Mr. McMahon repeatedly offered Bryan a corporate makeover, which Bryan consistently refused.
After Triple H and Stephanie created The Authority, McMahon celebrated Randy Orton's victory at TLC with them, but stepped aside from his on-screen authority role in early 2014 in order to evaluate Triple H and Stephanie's control of the company.
