The general alternative terms used are simply the gault clay belt mixed with (eroded) upper greensand, or the separate river valleys, see North Downs and Greensand Ridge for more studied geological concepts.
The southern boundary is defined by the foot of the escarpment which gives way to the flat, broad clay lands between the Downs and Greensand Ridge known as the Vale of Holmesdale.

The cross-country A25 road passes through the north of the town along the Vale of Holmesdale.

The M25 runs along the Vale of Holmesdale from its descent into the vale just before Sevenoaks at Junction 5 clockwise, running past Clacket Lane services, before ascending up the downs at Reigate however the A25 road continues on to Guildford in the vale itself.
It carries traffic from Guildford in Surrey eastward through Dorking along the southern edge of the North Downs, i.e. the Vale of Holmesdale, between that range and the Greensand Ridge to reach mid-west Kent.

Westerham

The ridge is separated by a mixed deep and shallow, fertile depression from the North Downs referred to as the 'Vale of Holmesdale', formed on Gault Clay, and a narrow band of Upper Greensand that outcrops at the foot of the chalk scarp (ridge).
